Diffusion Filters - they can also be used for lifting contrast and also creating halation, or glowing effects to specular light sources in a scene.

Contrast filters, if used skillfully, can lighten some colors and darken others in black and white, so you build the contrast of the image yourself, getting either very high dramatic contrast for landscape photography or low contrast for nude outdoor photography
